The Andover Community Music School opened its doors last fall to bring music to the greater Andover area. Our mission is to encourage people of all ages to connect through music, either as performer or audience member. We are incorporated as a non-profit and run our programs in the new education wing at South Church on Central Street.Â
Elementary-age instrument instruction is a very big part of our curriculum. Music is very valuable for the development of kids of this age. Research has shown that music study improves spatial reasoning, enhances brain development, improves motor control, and enhances emotion control and improved memory. Research has also shown that middle and high school students who participated in instrumental lessons score significantly higher in standardized tests than their non-musician peers. Music provides wonderful social opportunities for children as they enter middle school and high school – participating in orchestra, band, chorus, theater or other music groups gives experiences that few other activities can.Â
We offer private and group lessons in cello, clarinet, drums/percussion, flute, guitar, organ, piano, recorder, saxophone, and violin.  We also have classes in musicianship and music composition. Classes are held in the afternoon and early evening.Â
Our new introductory classes in cello, acoustic guitar, drums and violin begin the week of February 22nd. They are designed for 3rd-5th grade students who are beginning on these instruments. These 14 week classes are taught by dedicated instructors with Masters in performance in their instruments from institutions such as Julliard and Berklee. These are perfect classes to get your child started on a lifetime of music. The cost is $290 for the 14 week term.Â
Our musicianship class is designed to help elementary school age children develop musician skills beyond private lessons and in-school programs. It meets once a week and students practice rhythm and ear training skills. They also learn basic music theory: music notations, scales and modes, chords, chord progression, basic melody design and basic harmony. The cost is $150 for children who take lessons at ACMS and $250 for others.
